Vibrations of the Universe OM

OM is one of the best-known mantras in Indian spiritual traditions. For some people it symbolises wholeness and connection; for others it is simply a sound that can be felt in the body and allowed to fade into the darkness.

What OM symbolises

In traditional interpretations, OM is understood as a primordial sound or vibration and as a symbol of past, present and future. When chanting it, you may notice the connection between your voice, breath and body.

The meanings associated with the OM mantra come from spiritual and philosophical traditions. They are not scientific claims, but symbolic and meditative ways of working with sound and attention.

Sound can be perceived differently in darkness than during an ordinary day. Without visual stimuli, attention may turn more easily toward breath, voice and subtle bodily sensations.

The three sounds A – U – M

A

Waking

In traditional symbolism, the sound A is associated with the physical body, the material world and the waking state.

U

Dreaming

The sound U is often associated with the mind, the inner world, imagination and the state of dreaming.

M

Deep stillness

In traditional interpretations, M relates to deep sleep, silence and a state in which ordinary mental activity recedes.

Four states of consciousness

The OM symbol is also interpreted through four states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, deep sleep and so-called turiya—a state said to transcend the usual divisions of experience.

In traditional graphic representations, the individual curves represent different states of consciousness. The dot above them symbolises turiya, while the semicircle between the dot and the other elements is often interpreted as maya—the illusion of separateness.

These meanings belong to Indian spiritual traditions. They can be understood as a map for meditation and self-observation, not as an objective description of how the human mind works.

A simple practice in darkness

If you wish, during the retreat you can explore how the individual parts of the sound feel in your body. There is nothing you need to “do correctly”. Simply sit or stand comfortably, breathe calmly and listen to your own voice.

1. A

Begin with the open sound “A” and notice where it resonates most strongly in your body.

2. U

Move smoothly into “U” and notice how the character of the vibration changes.

3. M

Let the sound move into a soft “M” and notice how it fades, followed by silence.

You can also imagine the breath rising along the spine as you inhale and descending as you exhale. If that image does not suit you, simply leave it out.

Try chanting both more loudly and very softly, and notice the difference. The aim is not to achieve a particular state, but to observe your own experience.

Sound as part of the retreat

Singing, humming or working with a simple sound can be a pleasant way for some people to turn their attention inward in the darkness. Others will prefer complete silence. Both are equally valid.

The OM mantra is traditionally used in meditation and some people find it calming. It is better to understand that effect as a personal experience rather than as a treatment or health promise.
