A couples dark retreat is presented here as an intense experience that can deepen connection by removing external visual stimuli. It gives two people space to focus on closeness, communication and feelings without the usual distractions of everyday life.
Some of the main reasons couples seek this experience include:
• Deeper emotional connection: darkness creates space for “being present”, where partners can focus more closely on their emotions and their shared bond. With vision removed, attention shifts more strongly to the other senses and to the emotional experience.
• Testing and strengthening the relationship: sharing isolation in darkness can reveal relationship patterns in a direct way and may help partners find a new way toward each other or deepen an existing bond.
• Shared calm and silence: a couple experiences the power of being silent together, which may lead to deeper mutual understanding and a calmer way of being together.
• Stepping away from stress: darkness removes many work and everyday demands, allowing partners to give each other their full attention.
• A different sense of togetherness: some couples describe a strong feeling of merging or unity in the darkness that continued to resonate after returning to everyday life.

Reasons to choose a dark retreat for two
3. partners who feel that the relationship may no longer make sense
4. partners hoping for a child
5. deepening the relationship between a parent and a child
1) A harmonious relationship – a dark retreat for two
If you genuinely feel that you and your partner walk side by side, you can use a shared retreat of three to forty-nine days to deepen that relationship further. The couples cabin was inspired by my own experience of being accompanied in the darkness by my beloved husband. The physical and emotional experiences were difficult to put into words. Every person experiences darkness differently, but when you stay together you can share what is happening immediately and may experience a deeper, even mystical sense of connection. Only by trying it can you discover what the retreat may bring to your own relationship.
You may also feel overloaded by obligations, information and the pace of modern life. A dark retreat can be a chance to stop and make space for deep rest.
Before the retreat you can use the saunu or the outdoor hot tub.
2) Partners who need a change
Have you been together for a long time and feel that the relationship has become routine? Have children arrived and you feel that everything now revolves around them? Maybe you simply feel that you need a change.
A dark retreat for two can bring passion, intimacy, relaxation and fresh inspiration into a relationship. The only way to know is to try it. Please remember, however, that both of you need to feel ready for the darkness. There is no need to push or rush. Everything has its own timing, and allowing the experience to unfold naturally is important for both partners.
Before the retreat you can use the saunu or the outdoor hot tub.
3) Partners who feel the relationship may no longer make sense
Communication is important in both short- and long-term relationships, yet most of us were never taught how to talk about our feelings, hurts, wishes or needs. Few people saw this modelled clearly in their families. Darkness can offer an unusual space where you can feel inwardly alone while your partner is still beside you. You can simply listen and be listened to. Because you cannot see the other person’s face or immediate reactions, familiar defensive or attacking patterns may be less automatic. This can open the door to deep conversations and reconciliation.
The author describes this process as first working with one’s own troubled mind so that the other person can be met with greater understanding. Reaching that point can feel like compassion rather than automatic action and reaction. Deep inner conversations that a partner can hear may support reconciliation and understanding. A couple may leave feeling newly in love, or they may realise that the relationship no longer makes sense, but without remaining locked in conflict. Listening to each other in darkness may support mutual understanding and compassion, even if the partners ultimately decide to separate.
Before the retreat you can use the saunu or the outdoor hot tub.
4) Partners hoping for a child
The original text reflects on couples who are trying to conceive and suggests a dark retreat as a space for relaxation and intimacy before or alongside other choices they may be considering. Before entering the darkness, couples can relax in the sauna or outdoor hot tub. A partner may use the sauna while the woman is cared for with gentle rocking using a Rebozo shawl. After several hours of relaxation, the couple enters the retreat space together. With visual cues removed, the author describes a sense of reduced self-consciousness and a different dimension of intimacy and sexual connection. Even if the retreat does not lead to conception, the text presents it as an opportunity to experience the relationship and intimacy from a new perspective.

5) Deepening the relationship between parent and child
The text also describes darkness retreats for mothers or fathers with children and for parents who see a close bond with their child as an important life experience. The idea came to the author when her daughters, then seven and four, strongly wanted to spend time in darkness with her. She describes both children as calm and says they managed ordinary self-care tasks together without difficulty.
The original text recommends the experience from age three upward.
Benefits described by the author:
- very intense, conscious contact with your child
- the possibility of deep communication with your child
- an opportunity to work with fear of the dark and to show through your own calm presence that darkness itself is not dangerous
- a powerful shared experience that may stay with you for life
